Ever hear of Joe Perez? Me neither
until just recently when he applied to have his blog listed on the Saint Blog's Parish Directory. If you've spent any time at all cruising the blogs of Saint Blog's you'll know that all sorts of Catholics congregate there. You'll also note no doubt that almost without exception opinions, discussions, arguments, disagreements, comments, posts .. you name it ... are all within acceptable levels of civility. Joe's application showed up in my inbox a couple of days ago. I finally got around to visiting the blog and
I emailed Joe:
Hi Joe, thanks for your request. I've reviewed the blog and all I can say is that it wouldn't matter if you were the Holy Father himself - I won't intentionally list blog's whose posts contain language such as I found on "Until". I make no apologies - we tend to be pretty easy-going but Saint Blog's also attempts to be as "family friendly" as possible and the language definitely crosses a line. Vulgarities and obscenities simply are not acceptable. If you clean up the language I'll list the blog, simple as that..
and Joe responded:
Thanks for considering my blog. Of course, having learned of its strict censorship of sites occasionally using adult language, I can't compromise my integrity to be listed in your G-rated website. I write unapologetically for adults using real language that real people speak, language that stirs and occasionally challenges or offends, just as life often stirs, challenges, and offends. Unfortunately, in certain tepid corners of Christendom today, such examples have become unacceptable for a variety of reasons, esp. spiritual cowardice.I certainly wouldn't want any of your readers to be offended by my occasional use of the F-word ... or my belief in the real presence of Christ, for that matter. Christ's commandment to eat of his flesh, for example, an invitation to cannibalism in unmistakably plain language, would surely be scandal to St. Blog's Parish (unless centuries of use and misuse had so watered down the Eucharist truth that people have entirely forgotten its potential to shock and offend). Thank you once again for your consideration, and I do appreciate your taking a look and deciding that St. Blog's Parish is not a suitable place for commentary by real adults about Christianity in real life. All the best, Joe
What you don't know is that what shocked me most wasn't so much Joe's use of the F-word as his use of it in reference to an Archbishop of the Church. I notice that Joe has since edited the title of the particular post from it's original "Go f*** yourself Archbishop Prendergast and have a merry Christmas" to "A Prayer of Anger" (although the post still ends with the profane comment that had been the title). Read the rest of the posts and you'll quickly realize Joe has a huge axe to grind. If you're interested in what he thinks about us here's a sample from his rant "Rejected by St. Blog's":
Faith is vulgar. Life is vulgar. The Cross is vulgar. If Until is vulgar, it's because it strives to be real to what is. The Catholicism of Saint Blog's Parish is apparently the sanitized, flushed-down-the-toilet, hide-your-eyes-and-don't-peek sort of religiosity appropriate for children and adults with a childlike spirituality who demand to be chaperoned. I'm glad I know better now. You want to hear vulgar you should listen to me try to sing. DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA!
Mistaking childish faith for child-like faith, St. Blog's Parish has set its goal at being the Internet's #1 destination for watered-down sorts of Christianity suitable for children of age 13. The Christ who said uncomfortable truths in plain language surely would be advised to clean up his language before joining. One of my favorite sayings of Jesus: "If anyone comes to me, and doesn't hate his own father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he can't be my disciple." I would bet THAT sort of hate speech isn't allowed at St. Blog's Parish either. We mustn't make the children uncomfortable, dear.Personally, I don't feel Until is vulgar enough. Using the F-word once in a while is nothing. The horror of our times is that even well-intentioned people do at least as much harm in the world as they do good and they do so over and over again, not even once noticing the foul stench of festering cruelty deposited in their trail. The shadow of St. Blog's Parish reeks up the blogosphere--it's the unacknowledged darkness of a world whose sense of righteousness demands that it condemn scandals of the week, pseudo-outrages, and F-word vulgarity so that it need never turn to face the emptiness in its soul, hollow bones of neediness too great a scandal to acknowledge.
Phew! I'm sure glad someone finally told me! I had no idea I was so offensive! I'll certainly try to be MORE real and LESS Catholic from now on! I'm of the opinion we were set up and that all along Joe was hoping to be rejected to prove he's right - that it's only Joe that is a "real Catholic" -- the rest of us are just so many simpering sheep. Kathy Shaidle (Relapsed Catholic) seems to know a bit about Joe and writes "Well known enlightened, love-filled Christian blogger says:". Kathy says it all as far as I'm concerned.
It's good this doesn't happen often (in fact I've NEVER run into anyone like Joe .... EVER!) I'd be passing this directory thing off to some other simpering sheep in the fold!
For the record I've cited Joe's 12/16 post from which I gathered he was gunning for us:
Officially, I am more inclined to call myself a non-denominational Christian rather than a Roman Catholic. However, I do not hold myself out as heterodox from official Roman Catholic doctrine as taught by Vatican II, which demands that Catholics inform their conscience by the Church teaching but ultimately they are obligated to obey their own conscience. I have received the sacraments in the Roman Catholic Church and am powerless to actually remove myself from any membership in the organization (Catholics are not permitted to excommunicate themselves).
My credentials in Roman Catholicism include being a past vice-president of the Roman Catholic Student Association at Harvard University, having received the grade of "A" in the Harvard Divinity School course in Contemporary Roman Catholic theology, and having written a senior Honor's thesis on Roman Catholic liberation theology. In my early blogging days in 2003, my blog was even prominently listed for a while on the sidebar of the #1 Roman Catholic right-wing blogger in the world, Mark Shea! (Let's not concern ourselves with WHY he listed my site for the moment, okay?) My memoir Soulfully Gay explores my spiritual journey with, through, and beyond conventional Roman Catholicism into what is, for me, a more authentic and more truly catholic expression of my membership in the Body of Christ. I loved Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ! My mom, God bless her soul, attends mass daily. All those credentials aside, I have a baptismal certificate and am confirmed! Therefore, by the Roman Catholic Church's own accounting, I am Catholic.
Let's see if the Catholic blog directories agree, or if they will exercise unfortunate ideological prejudices by setting themselves up as judge and jury over my relationship to God. Perhaps if they don't like what they see, they can start a petition drive to have me ex-communicated? At least then they'd have good cause not to include Until in their listings. ;-)
myCatholic.com includes this disclaimer: "While we only try to link to faithful and trustworthy sources, the sites we link to are developed by people over whom we have no control. Furthermore, our users are both conservative and liberal, Republican and Democrat, traditional and untraditional Catholics." Until sounds like a perfect fit!
I've also applied for membership in the St. Blog's Parish webring and directory. I have read their membership guidelines which have no particular disclaimers about orthodoxy or heterodoxy, liberal or conservative, etc. I have added their code snippet to my pages. So let's wait with bated breath to see if Until will soon join the Catholic blogosphere.
I've also applied to join the Catholic Blog Directory. However, I'm not optimistic. The gatekeeper is a priest. Mystics and priests have been in conflict throughout religious history, and today is no different.
Say a prayer for the inclusion of Until. Not merely because it would arguably prove the esistence of God. But because the all-too-conventional Roman Catholic world desperately needs more authentically catholic voices.
Update 12/20: Eric "Funky Dung" had this to say about that:
